Nudges can be both autonomy-preserving and effective: evidence from a survey and quasi-field experiment

Abstract Nudges are widely employed tools within organizations, but they often criticized for harming autonomy and being ineffective. We assess these two criticisms simultaneously: can nudges be both autonomy-preserving effective in changing behavior? developed three – an opinion leader nudge, a rule-of-thumb self-nudges to reduce particularly sticky behavior: email use. In survey experiment of 4,112 healthcare employees, we tested their effect on perceived subjective effectiveness. also traditional policy instruments comparison. Next, objective effectiveness, conducted quasi-field large organization with estimate 1,189 active users. found that each nudge isolation, especially when combined, was effective, more so than like access limit or monetary reward. some evidence the combination all decreased actual This paper advances literature by showing how innovations design improve nudges’ ability effective.
